In the month of Shravan (July–August), this holiday is observed on the fifth day of the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha). This day is observed as Naga Chaturthi in the majority of South India. Due to the Naga and Lord Garuda’s joint adoration on this day, it is also known as Garuda Panchami (Snakes).

Garuda Panchami: Its History and Meaning

According to legends, Sage Kashyapa had two wives named Vinita and Kadru. While Vinita gave birth to just Garuda, Kadru gave birth to a thousand snakes. Garuda is characterised as having a powerful personality, a golden body, enormous crimson wings, and a crown on his head. He also has a white face with an eagle’s beak.

When the ocean was being stirred up, Kadru and Vinita placed wagers on the hue of the tail of Uchaishravas, the flying horse with seven heads. While Vinita, the mother of Garuda, believed the colour to be white, Kadru, the mother of a thousand snakes, declared the colour to be black. Whoever loses the bet must serve the other, was the wager’s stake. By requesting that her sons, the Nagas, hold onto the tail of Uchaishravas, Kadru cheated on Vinita. The horse’s white story changed to black as a result. Garuda and Vinita were now made to serve Kadru and her sons. They treated them poorly. The Nagas subsequently consented to release Garuda and his mother in exchange for his obtaining Amrit (Ambrosia), which belonged to the Devas’ King “Indra.”

Garuda liberated himself and his mother from Indra’s grip by stealing the pot of Amrit (Ambrosia) from him. Garuda, however, became enraged with snakes as a result of their dishonesty and bad behaviour. When Lord Vishnu saw that Garuda had taken Ambrosia from Indra to save his mother and had not even taken a drop for himself, he was impressed. So he requested a boon from Garuda. Right away, Garuda declared that he need a place above Vishnu and became his Vahana.

To demonstrate the unwavering link between Garuda and his mother, Vinita, Garuda Panchami is observed. Mothers and sons commemorate this day together to strengthen their bond and love for one another. For their children’s future and greater health, mothers worship the deity Garuda.

According to the texts, whomever is granted Garuda’s amicable looks will succeed. He is powerful and formidable. Garuda is revered by all Lord Vishnu believers and has a strong connection to the divinity. He is able to grant his followers eight different types of Siddhis.
